We have our family traditions for Thanksgiving. We run a race, eat apple pie for breakfast, watch the Macy’s Parade, the Dog Show, It’s a Wonderful Life…all while we cook, snack, and snooze our way through until dinnertime when we stuff our faces full of yumminess prepared by my older daughters. It’s a joyful time.
So many things to be grateful for.
And yet, what makes all this so sweet, so very precious to me, is a keen awareness that all of our Gold Star families we serve through Believe With Me don’t have their entire family around the table. Their funny husband, the dad that was the great cook in the family, the brother that always played pranks, the one that loves the cobbler made by Grandma just so…in some cases a mother, sister, auntie, or daughter…their chair is empty at the table. An empty chair…a broken family. Pain in every corner of their lives. Overwhelming– and yet the quiet resolve and strength it takes to soldier on…to keep moving forward…to keep pushing through each day, even if it is just one breath at a time…is so inspiring to me that it has gotten me through many of my own dark and trying days.
So Happy Thanksgiving to all of you this special holiday season. May we all be keenly aware of the blessing of family this Christmas as we remember in our prayers those families we serve together through Believe With Me that are missing loved ones. If you appreciate the freedoms that our Gold Star families have provided you with the lives of their loved ones, I hope you’ll consider sponsoring a Gold Star family this Christmas or just donating to our cause of bringing thousands of Gold Star family members love, honor hope, and help this Christmas here.
